15th International Meeting of 2cv Friends - Vinadio, Italy
At the end of July 2003, members of the Surrey Madhatters Club gathered at Clacket Lane services on the M25 with their 2cvs ready to make the journey to Italy for the international meeting at Vinadio. Our outward journey took us across France and into Italy via the Frejus tunnel (no mountain sightseeing but quick). We spent the night in Turin and set off the next morning to complete the 80-odd miles south to Vinadio.
When we got there we found that a large number of 2cv-ers had already arrived, so the campsite was filling up fast. We were directed to a separate area overlooking the valley, which turned out to be a meadow full of wonderful flowers, and told to camp there. We got ourselves organised and then started to explore.
The weather was great, the meeting venue included an old fort, there was lots to see and lots of people to talk to. We saw loads of 2cvs, some of the paint-jobs were very clever and we took a huge number of photos. The international food tasting session was interesting and very busy.
In the middle of all this Bob and Carol, who were touring Europe in their H-van, found time to get married at the local town hall!
Sadly, all too soon it was over and it was time to make our way back. We decided to take the slower, scenic route back and drove over the mountains via Barcelonette, where we stayed for a couple of nights before going on to Grenoble (where it was 42C phew!).
Everyone was very friendly and Italy is a lovely place to visit. The ‘official’ statistics say that 10,000 people from 32 countries attended, bringing 4,000 2cvs and derivatives with them. And we managed to drink some 30.900 liters of Pedavena Beer (supplied by Partesa Piemonte). Sounds like we had a good time (we did).
