St. Valentine’s Convoy
It was our pleasure to once again join the Pompey Puddleducks for their traditional St Valentine’s convoy. ‘Other engagements’ depleted the numbers a bit this year and Sean took up the challenge to organise the day, which he did superbly. Whilst not exactly brilliant sunshine it was pleasant enough as we assembled at the Churchillian car-park, where willing hands quickly distributed the roses and mega Valentine biscuits - using my bonnet as a serving table.
Emilio and Carol Porcaro (one of the few winter Mehari-ists in the UK) made the trek from t’other side of London to be with us and arrived munching though giant breakfast burgers bought from the famous van just along the hill – to envious glances all round! Great to see Jef and Ann Fox from Wandsworth as well.
The Convoy route was tried and tested from last year and pretty soon re-grouped at the usual loo-stop, which was quite a ‘relief’ for some amongst us. From then on it was just lovely wending our way through the country lanes and villages with the Spring flowers already showing, friendly waves everywhere and not even an irate horsewoman to upset the calm this time!
Stansted House is a popular venue and was very busy parking-wise so we got a bit scattered, but most gravitated to their very good Garden Centre to enjoy a wander round and partake of lunch in their excellent café – the lasagne we had was to die for. The miniature railway was again running, but with a diesel loco instead of steam this year.
A really great day out with all our 2cv friends so many thanks to the Puddleducks and Sean in particular for organising it all – we’ll be back next year.
